Secretary - Brent Stephens

Dr. Brent Stephens is an Associate Professor of Architectural Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, IL. He has 10 years of experience performing building energy and IAQ field assessments and developing and applying models for energy use, IAQ, health, and economic impacts of indoor air pollution. Dr. Stephens directs the Built Environment Research Group at IIT (www.built-envi.com), which consists of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers conducting research on energy efficiency and IAQ in buildings. His research has been funded by the U.S. EPA, ASHRAE, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, NIOSH, and AHRI. His research to date covers five main areas of investigation that relate to improving understanding of the physics, chemistry, and microbiology of indoor environments and how they impact building energy use and human health, including: (1) identifying and quantifying the sources, fate, transport, and control of indoor air pollutants; (2) quantifying and assessing human exposure to indoor air pollutants and associated health risks; (3) assessing and improving building energy efficiency for sustainable design and operation; (4) developing building science and indoor air quality measurement methods and techniques; and (5) designing and deploying inexpensive, open source building environmental sensors.
