ISIAQ Chapters
Chapters of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate
The International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ) consists of members spread across many countries, disciplines and philosophies. To fulfill its objectives, as well as to expand its operation and to grow in strength, the Society needs to ensure its presence in all regions of the world. In this way the Society will serve the local needs and will draw from local experience. An effective way to achieve this objective is to operate via Chapters, which are serviced by members who are most aware of the local needs and strengths. This pages provides guidelines for broad aspects relating to the role of the Chapters, their operation, activities, links with the Society and with other professional organizations.

Role of the Chapters
The role of the Chapters is twofold:
To promote activities and interests of ISIAQ at the Chapter's level of organization, by promoting membership in the Society and the activities and publications of the Society, by serving as a reference point for professional information regarding indoor air, and by providing contact points for the existing members; and
To actively seek opportunities for expanding ISIAQ in all regions of the world and all countries by organizing professional events and by attracting new members.
Formation of the Chapters
A Chapter can be formed if there is a sufficient membership base to support its operation. The minimum number of members necessary to create a Chapter is five, and at least one of them should demonstrate a proven record of active involvement in the Society.
Initiation of Chapter formation could be either by a proposal for establishing a chapter from a local area to the ISIAQ Board of Directors (BOD), or by an invitation from the BOD. If the initiation is by invitation from the BOD, a member or a group of members to whom the invitation was addressed should prepare a proposal to the BOD.
The BOD will assess the proposal based on the following criteria:
- membership base and record of involvement in the Society;
- plan for organization of the Chapter; and
- a general description of proposed activities by the Chapter.
Once the Chapter is approved by the BOD, its formation, program and contact information is communicated to the members in the Newsletter or by other means.
Each Chapter will initially be formed for three years, after which its operation will be reviewed by the BOD. Following recommendations from the review, the Chapter's operation can be extended for another three years, or can be terminated. The review process is conducted every three years.
Operation of Chapters
Each Chapter is led by a person elected by Chapter members as the chair. The chair should be supported by a small committee composed of at least a deputy chair and a secretary. The chair and the committee are approved by the BOD. The chair and the committee shall serve for a period of three years. At the end of each three-year period, an election should be conducted within the Chapter to select a new chair and committee.
Change of chair or a committee member between elections could take place if:
- the chair or a current committee member resigns; or
- there is evidence that the chair or a committee member acts against ISIAQ interests.
- each Chapter should have an office
or at least an address for communication.
Once a year the Chapter should present a concise report of its activities to the BOD
Interactions of
the Chapters with other national or regional professional organizations
The Chapters may wish to identify local professional organizations with overlapping or complementary interests and establish links with these organizations in order to support each other's activities, for the mutual benefit of the members.
The links established could be informal or could progress towards an MOU between the ISIAQ Chapter and the local professional organization. However, any MOU between an ISIAQ Chapter and another local professional organization must be approved and signed by the BOD or its designated representative.
Activities of the Chapters
The following are activities which, in principle, should be undertaken by each Chapter:
- Establishing and maintaining communication with the members in their area, by means most suitable for the area.
- Continuous identification of local needs and capabilities in the areas of information exchange, training, discussion forum, etc.
- Organization and co-organization of activities such as meetings, seminars, conferences, workshops or training courses.
- Communicate to the BOD of specific needs and capabilities of the Chapter.
- Seeking the Society's support on specific activities.
- Promotion of the Society by inclusion of information about the Society in the local media, as well as during relevant professional events.
- Identification of local channels for financial support either for organizing of local events, or for membership participation in major Society events.
Society's support for the Chapters
Society supports the Chapters by:
- Providing information about their operation and activities to all the members either in the Newsletter by other means.
- Providing expert advice on organization of specific
activities or events.
- Providing support in major local activities, by direct involvement of a designated BOD member or another nominated person.
- Supplying the Chapter with membership brochures, posters and
other relevant materials.
